Say it! Sing it! Play it! In Cherokee

Through fun storytelling and catchy songs, performer Chris Griffith leads children and their adults into an adventure of keeping alive an endangered language. Sing along and you, too, will learn how to count to three, make the basic sounds, say hello and thank you in Cherokee!  Recommended for ages 3 and up.

Chris Griffith is the co-Creative Director of Z Puppets Rosenschnoz, an award winning performing and teaching artist and enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation.

Although his family roots are in Oklahoma, Chris has lived outside Cherokee Nation most of his life.

Recently, the Cherokee Nation declared a state of emergency for their language. With Say It! Sing It! Play It! In Cherokee, Chris taps into the power of playfulness to raise awareness of and revive interest in this and other indigenous languages facing extinction.

Chris developed this performance with support from an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.

Chris Griffith is a fiscal year 2019 recipient of an Arts Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

A LA CARTE is a comic battle between a clown French Chef and a wily lobster set to live accordion music.  A family-friendly spectacle, A LA CARTE is a playfully interactive comedy featuring clowning, puppetry, music and a few unruly vegetables.

The play begins as the Chef sets the table for the Grand Opening of his 2-seat café.  Before the Chef can dazzle his very important guests, dinner’s main ingredient stages a rebellion — again and again and again.  Who knew crustaceans could cook up such delicious mischief? Originally commissioned by the Jerome Foundation and In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater, this playfully interactive comedy has been featured at the National Puppetry Festival, Theater Tulsa Summer Festival, and Smoky Hill River Arts Festival. Recommended for ages 3 and up.

“The brilliance of its slapstick routines is on par with anything from the glory days of Laurel and Hardy.”   — MN Daily

Click Here for a complete guide to this event.

Z Puppets Rosenschnoz welcomes you to take a place at the table and call into action someone who inspires you to make the next step towards liberation from life’s narrow passages.  This uniquely intimate puppet theater experience will delve into the rich emotional landscape of struggle, loss, and triumph which we inherit and inhabit.

WATCH IT!

First, a story by award-winning Z Puppets’ artists Shari Aronson and Chris Griffith accompanied by Twin Cities’ stellar world music performer, Greg Herriges.  Shari and Chris will use puppetry to bring into being two characters from their own ancestry: a 3500 yr.-old Jewish woman who was with Moses at the crossing of the Red Sea and a 6-yr old Cherokee time traveler bearing witness to the Trail of Tears.

MAKE IT!

Then, Z Puppets’ artists will lead you through simple steps to make power figures — small puppets embodying sources of strength.

TAKE IT!

Bring your power figure with you wherever you roam to help you find your road to freedom.  Z Puppets encourages you to share back (via selfies, texts, and voicemails) where you and your puppet end up.

Through the Narrows is made possible by grants from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, Rimon Jewish Arts Council, and Brin Jewish Arts Endowment. Limit 15 participants.

Playwriting Basics: Focus on Action with Jessica Huang

Want to:

• create gripping scenes that keep audiences on the edge of their seats?

 • ground your highly theatrical, spectacular magical realism so emotions hit home?

 • communicate back-stories or important themes without sacrificing story?

Acclaimed playwright Jessica Huang returns for a three hour workshop that will help you activate dialogue and plot-points in your scripts so your stories sing on stage. Learn how to transform simple scenes into compelling psychological manipulations, battles of wits, and/or meet-cutes that sizzle with sexual tension. Walk away with the skills you need to provide roadmaps for actors, communicate all that pesky back-story, and give audiences an unforgettable experience.

Part of our Playwriting Basics series, Focus in Action is a workshop for all levels, beginners who need a jump start as well as artists who are looking to sharpen their skills crafting scenes. Perfect for film and theatre makers, sketch writers and puppetry artists who want to take their text to the next level.
